Specialist Coatings FAQ

Specialist Coating FAQ's

It is important to consider many other factors besides just the price per litre/kg.

Does the product require an activator or hardener? How many coats are required to achieve the necessary durability and/or finish quality? What will it cost to dispose of any waste? What application/drying/curing facilities are required?

Make sure you assess the cost of the whole coating process, not just the direct material price.

Wherever possible, evaluate coating options according to the relevant industry standards such as BS476 Pt 2 or the Euro Classes for Fire Retardant systems.

It is critical to ensure that the coatings are approved for use for the substrate and purpose you require.

This is a broad consideration in this sector as there is such a wide range of coatings and substrates.

Pay good attention to the relevant surface preparation, film thickness and drying process advice given on the coating data sheet for optimum results.

Most industries are moving towards more user-friendly and sustainable coatings and there are water-based options for most substrates and environments.

There are a number of factors to consider but it doesn’t need to feel daunting as Kortec have taken many of our clients through this process. Some of these are covered here  5 Things You Should Know About The Transition From Solvent To Water-Based Coatings and a basic spray equipment changeover process can be found here WB to SB Instructions.

Our broad stock holding enables us to typically deliver goods ordered in 1-2 days. However, non-standard products may take 3-5 days to order and ship to you.

Heat Resistant Coatings

Heat Resistant

Protection of wood/metal from heat
Heat resistant coatings are suitable for metal products that are subject to high heat levels during their life, such as exhaust systems, pipes or valves carrying hot liquids e.g. furnaces/boilers etc.
The choice of system is affected by temperatures experienced, length of temperature cycles and environmental protection. The coatings are usually thin-film products to reduce heat build-up within the film, and where possible primers are not used as this normally reduces the heat resistance of the film.
Chemical Resistant Coatings

Chemical Resistance

Providing assurance and protection
Nearly every coating is subject to chemical attack at some level - traffic/industrial fumes, acid rain, liquid spillages, lubricants and cleaning agents all contain chemicals that will attack a coated surface over a prolonged period of time.
The coating systems used for chemical resistance depend level o exposure, type and strength, lifespan and substrate/preparation. Popular coating solutions include: Epoxy, Epoxy Phenolic, Polyurethane/Acrylic and Moisture-Cured Polyurethanes (MCU).
Intumescent Fire Protection Coatings

Intumescent Fire Protection

Formation of an insulating layer
Develop a layer of protective substance that works by chemical reaction generated by heat, resulting in swelling and formation of an insulating layer on the surface. This method is typically used on structural steel, although there are systems available for timber and more.
The system used and film weights required are dependent on the protection time required (according to BS 476 Part 20 & 21 - normally 30, 60 or 90 minutes), the dimensions, exposure and location of the item coated.
Unusual Substrate Coatings

Unusual Substrates

High-quality practically & aesthetically
Developing reliable coating solutions that are suitable for unusual substrates. Typically coatings that are suitable for use on glass, GRP, ABS and other plastics.
Coatings for unusual substrates that are durable and have high-quality characteristic, practically and aesthetically.
Special Finish Coatings

Special Finishes

Metallic, pearlescent & more
Developing reliable coating solutions that produce high-quality and visually stunning special finishes. Produced with a consistent result (finish quality and colour) and excellent product durability for longevity.
Most common special finishes include the following styles: metallic, pearlescent, craquelet (crackle) and any additional textured finishes.
Sayerlack Wood Coatings

Sayerlack

Covering almost every eventuality with an extremely extensive range.
Sayerlack have developed some of the most innovative and highest quality wood finishes in the market. Their environmental consciousness has led to the design of many superb water-based coatings.
Sayerlack water-based coatings have advantages of low odour and non-hazardous waste, and the traditional drawbacks of extended drying times, poor clarity and limited durability have been eliminated.
Varlaq Kitchen Coatings

Varlaq

When production times, robust performance and a quality finish count.
Waterbased, acid-catalysed, polyurethane and precat systems for all internal and external solutions.
Full colour-matching service to bespoke samples in addition to RAL, Pantone, BS, NCS, Dulux and all other high-profile paint brands.
Consistently high pigmentation levels and solid content ensure you achieve full opacity without the need for multiple applications.
Fire Retardants

Fire Retardant

Wood & metal compliance with fire resistant protection standards
Providing reliable heat and fire resistant systems for the protection of both wood and metal.
There are typically very critical requirements affecting a fire retardant coating.  Total clarity is important regarding the specification and protection needed.
General classifications include intumescent, heat resistance and flame retardants.
